MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday placed the commander of the custodial corps, Gen. Mohamed Abdirahman, under house arrest after the Cabinet dismissed him, amid concerns he could travel to Southwest state.
The Cabinet appointed Gen. Mohamed Sheikh Osman as the new commander, replacing Abdirahman.
Abdirahman has long been considered a close ally of Southwest state President Abdiasis Laftagaren and is widely reported to be his father-in-law. According to political sources and local media, he refused to take part in a federal campaign aimed at removing Laftagaren from power in the region.
He is also reported to have expressed dissatisfaction with Mohamud’s handling of tensions in Southwest state. Critics accuse the federal government of inflaming divisions among regional clans, warning the approach risks triggering avoidable conflict and further bloodshed.
The prospect of renewed instability has raised alarm among residents and observers, particularly as much of Somalia, including Southwest state, faces a deepening drought. Millions are struggling with severe shortages of food and water, while widespread livestock losses have compounded the humanitarian crisis.
Local media reported Tuesday that Mohamud informed Abdirahman he was being held to prevent him from traveling to Baidoa and aligning with Laftagaren. Several politicians, including members of parliament and other influential figures, have already left Mogadishu for the regional capital.
The developments come as the federal government continues deploying additional troops and weapons to the region, including to the towns of Wajid, Hudur and Burhakaba, in what officials describe as efforts to assert federal authority, though some political observers view the moves as an attempt to install new regional leadership by force.
