Photo Credit: Mike Prior I’m an unapologetic which hailed it as “a political and cultural nexus, drawing inspiration from the Third World and then giving voice to it the world over.” The album gave us jams like “Waiting in Vain,” “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” “Three Little Birds,” “Natural Mystic,” “Jamming.” His anthem, “One Love” from Exodus was dubbed the Song of the Millennium (or Song of the Century) by the BBC, recognizing its timeless message of peace, unity and social harmony. It was originally recorded by the Wailers in 1965 over a ska beat as a single. Curtis Mayfield is credited as co-writer on the 1977 version of “One Love” because it incorporates lyrics from the Impressions’ 1965 song “People Get Ready” which was written by Mayfield and was a huge rallying cry during the Civil Rights Movement. The Impressions’ lead singer was a major influence on Marley. On the Exodus track list the song title is compound “One Love/People Get Ready.” The 2024 biopic Bob Marley: One Love earned approximately US $181 million worldwide. Exceeding initial expectations, it was a strong performer for a music biopic and brought Marley’s story and philosophy to a whole new generation.
