PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – President Jennifer Greelings-Simons has held “extensive consultations” with her Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, regarding the further development of cooperation between Suriname and Brazil, according to an official statement issued here.

The state-owned Suriname Communication Service (CDS) said that the talks focused on border security, the economy, agriculture, infrastructure, trade, and regional integration, among other topics.

It said that President Greelings-Simons and President Lula da Silva met on Thursday and that both leaders “discussed various subjects about bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Suriname and the Federative Republic of Brazil.

“With the meeting between the two government leaders and the results stemming from it, the cooperation between Suriname and Brazil is further strengthened. In recent months, various exploratory talks have already been held to develop the partnership further,” the statement added.

Last November, both leaders met on the sidelines of the Bélem Climate Summit, with the CDS reporting that “during that bilateral meeting, the foundation was laid for concrete agreements and cooperation in various fields”.

It said that President Greelings-Simons has previously indicated that cooperation with Brazil will focus primarily on border security and on supporting the further development of Suriname’s economic, agricultural, and social sectors.
