By Jose Luis Cruz: 17-year-old Derick Morris, a student of Sadie Vernon High School, was gunned down on Sunday night at his home on Crown Street in Belize City. He reportedly responded to a call at the door and was shot shortly after he opened the door. The teenager sustained serious gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) but succumbed to his injuries.
Morris was shot and killed just one day before he was to take final exams at Sadie Vernon High School. Sadly he became Belize’s fourth weekend murder victim.
His Alma Mater issued a statement saying “The Board of Management, Administration, Staff, and Student Body… extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the parents, family, relatives, and friends of our beloved student, Derrick Morris, on his untimely passing.”
The school said they will remember Derrick as a “valued member of our school family, and his loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him”.
Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Taegar-Panton also issued a statement of her own saying, “The pain is deep, and it stabs at the very soul of our nation. Here we go again! Belize has lost another son to senseless gun violence on our city streets.”
“Derick Morris…recently promoted to his senior year at Sadie Vernon Technical High School. He had served his school community in the highly coveted role of Peer Helper,” Panton added.
Panton expressed sympathy to the family noting “Yet, in a matter of minutes, perhaps seconds, he was gunned down, and the hope and aspirations he represented for his family, his school, his community, and his country were taken away without a single thought for those left behind.”
