The Brave Journey Across the Sea

This inspiring young South African proved that even the biggest challenges can be faced one stroke at a time.

The ocean looked enormous that morning.

From the shores of Cape Town, it stretched far into the distance, sparkling beneath the early sunlight. The waves rolled gently across the water, and somewhere beyond them sat Robben Island, surrounded by cold seas and strong currents.

Most people looking at that stretch of ocean would have thought about how difficult it would be to cross.

But Grade 10 learner Kami Engelbrecht wasn’t thinking about how far she had to swim.

She was thinking about her mom.

Over the past months, Kami had watched her mother, Shan, face one of the biggest challenges of her life. There had been hospital visits, treatments, difficult days and uncertain moments. Through it all, Shan kept showing courage, even when things were hard.

Watching her mom fight so bravely inspired Kami to do something extraordinary of her own.

She decided she would swim all the way from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand, a demanding 7.5-kilometre journey through the open ocean.

It wasn’t a challenge she took lightly. The sea is unpredictable, and the route is known for strong currents, cold water and unexpected obstacles. But every time Kami thought about giving up on the idea, she remembered the determination she saw in her mom.

If her mother could keep going through everything she was facing, then Kami could keep going too.

When the day of the swim finally arrived, Kami joined a group of swimmers and stepped into the chilly Atlantic Ocean. At first, the water felt calm, but before long the sea began reminding everyone just how powerful it could be.

Jellyfish drifted through the water. Currents pushed against the swimmers, making every stroke a little harder. At times, litter floated past, and the endless stretch of ocean seemed far bigger than it had from the shore.

Still, Kami kept swimming.

She focused on one stroke at a time, one breath at a time, one moment at a time.

Whenever her arms grew tired or the journey felt too long, she thought about why she had started. She thought about her mom. She thought about the strength her mother had shown throughout her treatment. And with every stroke, it felt as though she was sending a message across the water:

“I believe in you.”

Hour after hour, Kami pushed forward until finally the shoreline began to grow closer. The beach that had once seemed impossibly far away was now right in front of her.

After 3 hours and 23 minutes in the water, Kami reached Bloubergstrand.

She had done it.

Her family cheered. Friends celebrated. And her mother watched with pride shining in her eyes.

“I’m so proud of you and your determination,” Shan said afterwards. “My guiding light.”

But the swim wasn’t only about reaching the beach.

Kami wanted her challenge to encourage people to take care of their health and to understand how important early cancer detection can be. What began as a personal promise to her mother became a message of hope for many others.

Her journey showed that courage doesn’t always look the same.

Sometimes courage is swimming through cold ocean water when your muscles ache and the finish line feels far away.

Sometimes courage is sitting in a doctor’s office and facing difficult news.

And sometimes courage is simply choosing to stand beside someone you love and reminding them they are not alone.

As the waves rolled onto the shore that afternoon, Kami had completed far more than a swim. She had turned love into action, hope into movement and a family’s challenge into a story that could inspire others.

And that is the wonderful thing about courage.

Just like ripples in the ocean, it has a way of travelling much farther than we ever expect.
