For the first time since 1999, the NBA Finals were back inside Madison Square Garden, and New York treated it like the city had been waiting 27 years to exhale. The Knicks came home up 2-0 on the San Antonio Spurs, riding a 13-game postseason winning streak and carrying the kind of momentum that makes a championship feel close enough to touch. The matchup itself already had history built in, too. The last time the Knicks reached this stage, it was also against the Spurs, who beat New York in five games back in 1999.

For San Antonio, Game 3 had that “not technically must-win, but absolutely must-win” energy. Falling behind 3-0 in the Finals is basically asking for basketball history to bury you, so the Spurs came into MSG needing to slow down the Knicks’ wave before it turned into a full-on parade route. And with Victor Wembanyama still trying to answer every question about whether he was ready for the biggest stage, this was the kind of night that could either shrink a young team or grow one up fast.

The Spurs chose the second option. San Antonio beat New York 115-111, cutting the Knicks’ series lead to 2-1 and snapping that 13-game playoff winning streak in the process. Wembanyama was the headline, finishing with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks while shooting 11-for-18 from the field. Stephon Castle added 23 points and came up big late, while De’Aaron Fox helped stabilize the Spurs in the closing moments.

The Knicks still had their stars show up. Jalen Brunson dropped 32, OG Anunoby added 28, and MSG had plenty of moments where it felt like New York was ready to snatch another game out of thin air. But the Spurs kept attacking, got to the line more often, and survived the exact kind of fourth-quarter chaos the Knicks had been thriving in all postseason. Knicks head coach Mike Brown was not happy with the free-throw disparity afterward, and in a four-point Finals game, every whistle felt like its own subplot.

Still, as good as the game was, basketball was only the main course. Game 3 had everything: politics, celebrities, viral reactions, courtside comedy, halftime drama, security headaches, and enough side stories to make the night feel more like an HBO premiere than a Finals game. Here are the moments people were talking about when they weren’t locked in on the scoreboard.

Trump Got Booed At MSG

President Donald Trump became the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, but the Garden did not exactly give him a clean hometown welcome. When he appeared on the video board during the national anthem, the reaction was mixed at first before loud boos took over, with some “USA” chants also breaking through.

The “Trump Falling Asleep” Clip Went Viral

As if getting booed wasn’t enough, another clip made the rounds that appeared to show Trump with his eyes closed during the game. Whether he was actually asleep or just resting his eyes is unclear, but the internet ran with it immediately because…..why not?

The “Trump Curse” Took Over The Timeline

The Knicks came in hot, won 13 straight playoff games, had the city buzzing, and then lost the first game Trump attended. That was all the internet needed to start joking about a “Trump curse,” especially after all the extra security headaches fans had to deal with just to watch their team lose by four.

Cardi B Turned Halftime Into A Bronx Moment

Cardi B hit the halftime stage and gave the first Finals game in New York since 1999 exactly the kind of hometown energy it needed. She performed “Bodak Yellow” and “Bodega Baddies,” pulling focus with the performance, the outfit, and the nearly ankle-length hair that had beauty blogs talking.

Charles Barkley Couldn’t Help Himself With The Cardi B Joke

Cardi’s halftime show also had the “Inside the NBA” crew acting like everybody else watching from home. Charles Barkley went viral for a cheeky Cardi B comment, while Ernie Johnson, Shaq, Kenny and Draymond Green tried to keep it moving without completely losing it on air.

Celebrities Were Everywhere

This was not just a basketball game; it was a New York function. Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Timothée Chalamet, Spike Lee, Jeremy Lin, Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, Jay-Z, Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, Larry David, Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni, Michael Bloomberg and more were all spotted at MSG for Game 3.

Jose Alvarado Crashed Into Michael Bloomberg

Jose Alvarado gave former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg a courtside scare when he tumbled into his seat chasing a loose ball. Bloomberg appeared to be fine, and Alvarado checked on him before getting back to business, but the whole thing was the perfect “only in New York” courtside moment.

Spike Lee was right where he was supposed to be: courtside, loud, visible, and dressed like the unofficial mayor of Knicks fandom. He has been following the Knicks throughout the Finals, including the road games in San Antonio, and Game 3 at MSG gave him another chance to turn his seat into part of the show.

Fans Had To Deal With A Security Nightmare

Trump’s attendance brought heightened security around MSG, with street closures, TSA-style screening, a strict no-bag policy and a canceled outdoor watch party at the Garden. Fans were told to arrive early, and even Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox admitted the extra security created an inconvenience for players too.

The Watch Party Chaos Moved To Bryant Park

With the MSG watch party canceled, some fans shifted to Bryant Park, where the scene reportedly got messy outside the official viewing area. NBC New York reported fights and street chaos near the watch party, while the New York Post reported 21 people were detained, with eight facing charges and 13 receiving summonses.
