*Fans of “The Neighborhood” were shocked when CBS announced the beloved sitcom would end after its eighth season. The show wrapped filming in February 2026, and its series finale, titled ‘Welcome to Goodbye,’ is set to air on May 11, 2026. But why did a strong ratings performer get canceled?

According to Cedric the Entertainer, the answer is simple: money.

In an April 24 (2026) interview with “The Breakfast Club,” Ceddy-Ced revealed that rising production costs and salary demands were the main reasons “The Neighborhood” ended. Despite being one of CBS’s top comedies, the network ultimately decided against moving forward with a ninth season.

‘Everybody Needed Raises’

Cedric did not hold back. “After eight seasons, everybody needed raises, and that’s when you knew, ‘Alright, this show is getting ready to be done,’” he told the hosts.

He explained that CBS was willing to pay him more to continue. But he refused to be the only one benefiting. “They were like, ‘You want to come do another season?’ I was like, ‘You gotta take care of everybody else.’ That’s literally what happened, they was like, ‘Nah.’”

Cedric emphasized that he didn’t want to be “that guy” who kept going while his castmates, writers, and production staff were left behind. He noted that everyone from the ensemble cast to the behind-the-scenes crew deserved raises after eight successful seasons.

A Changing TV Industry

Cedric compared “The Neighborhood” to iconic sitcoms like “Friends,” where the entire cast famously negotiated huge raises together. But he pointed out that the television industry has changed dramatically. Broadcast networks are cutting costs amid streaming shifts and economic pressures.

By Seasons 7 and 8, “The Neighborhood” had a big-name ensemble cast including Cedric the Entertainer, Max Greenfield, Beth Behrs, Tichina Arnold, and others. That level of talent comes at a high price. “Deadline” confirmed that costs were the key factor in CBS opting for a “proper farewell season” rather than a long-term renewal.

CBS Confirms the End

CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach issued a statement honoring the show. “The brilliant cast and creative team at ‘The Neighborhood’ led by the incomparable Cedric the Entertainer have brought levity, laughter and poignant storylines to Monday nights for seven incredible seasons,” she said.

She added, “A strong ratings performer for CBS and one of the top comedies on TV, we believe the show’s loyal fans deserve a proper farewell season full of the trademark humor and heartfelt moments that are synonymous with the series.”

What About the Spinoff?

CBS had plans to expand “The Neighborhood” universe. The Season 7 finale served as a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff featuring Marty and Malcolm moving to Venice. However, that spinoff was reportedly scrapped due to budget constraints. Another offshoot, “Crutch” starring Tracy Morgan, moved to Paramount+.

“Deadline” noted that “’The Neighborhood’ and the offshoot, whose premises are somewhat of a mirror image, have been designed to run alongside each other.” But without the mothership series, the spinoff’s future remains uncertain.

A Blessing, not a Tragedy

Despite the disappointment, Cedric called the show’s run a “blessing” and his longest project. He expressed that he wished it could have continued but understood the business realities.

“The Neighborhood” premiered in 2018 and ran for more than 156 episodes. It was praised for blending humor with heartfelt stories about race, class, and community. The series finale, “Welcome to Goodbye,” aired on May 11, 2026, bringing the show to a close on its own terms.

Cedric summed it up best: “I was like, ‘You gotta take care of everybody else.’” And when CBS said no, he walked away with his integrity intact.
