These Good Dogs Are Saving South Africa’s Wildlife!

Did you know that some of the most important conservation work in South Africa happens on four legs?

South Africa (19 May 2026) – The Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Canine Conservation Unit is a mix of Malinois, German and Dutch Shepherds, and Border Collies.

They do conservation work across southern Africa that no ranger, scientist, or piece of technology could do without their four-legged instincts. And they’re very good at it!

These trained working doggies operate in wildlife protection across the region. They do everything from detecting illegal wildlife products at cargo terminals and roadblocks, tracking threats through the bush, and locating snares before they kill again. They are also skilled at helping our conservation scientists find rare and overlooked species that human eyes just can’t see.

Sadly, Southern Africa is losing species.

Poaching hasn’t stopped, and the illegal wildlife trade is worth billions. Rangers and conservationists are outgunned and underfunded. They are tasked with working across landscapes so vast that intersecting poachers, finding every snare or locking down the presence of endangered wildlife is next to impossible alone.

A dog’s nose makes all the difference in these cases. The EWT’S Canine Conservation Unit is faster and more accurate than most technology available. They can sniff out trouble faster than any human can!

“Our dogs are not mascots. They are trained conservation professionals.”

In celebrating their committed pack of working dogs, the EWT shares a look at each personality on the team! Pick your fighter below.

None of their hard work happens without support. The dogs need training, handlers, equipment, and ongoing care to stay in the field doing what they do. Support the unit here.
