Uganda: When Annoying Museveni’s Son ‘Annoys His Supporters’

Gen Muhoozi heads the military, chairs his political vehicle—the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU)—and also works as his father’s Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations. Active-service military officers and civil servants are barred from taking part in partisan politics by the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. And the trending vexers of Gen. Muhoozi are the people of Turkey represented by the Turkish Embassy in Kampala, Uganda’s capital. “18th September 2026, our stop will be at the Turkish Embassy, playing around with the sovereignty of our country will not be taken lightly. If you annoy our Chairman @mkainerugaba, the greatest CDF [Chief of Defense Forces] in the world, you annoy the entire PLU. It’s a date…” PLU’s General Secretary, Twalla Fadil, announced on September 13. The annoyance, it is said, stems from Tayyip Recep Erdogan’s Turkish government refusal to extradite Ugandan dissident Fred Lumbuye. Lumbuye stands accused of virulent social media attacks on the ruling establishment and the First Family in particular. Gen. Muhoozi and his father’s demands that Ankara hands him over to them or expel him altogether from Turkey have since come to naught. Turkey—which is said to be harboring ambitions of joining the European Union—is said to be finding it difficult to release a dissident to a country in which they will likely face a real danger of being killed or tortured, among other inhumane treatment. Lumbuye (below) himself recently cried on social media that his life was in danger. Muhoozi had earlier called for demonstrations outside the Turkish Embassy in Kampala over the matter, but the planned protests were abruptly called off. “I have today spoken with the chairman of PLU @mkainerugaba and he has said that we have talked to the Turkish people and agreed to call off the planned demonstration of Sept 01, 2026. We have an understanding, which, if they honor, we shall be very happy with them,” PLU mouthpiece, Andrew Mwenda, announced on August 25. Gen. Muhoozi had called for the “biggest demonstration Uganda has ever seen at the Turkish embassy on the 1st of September.” He, however, reverted to the demonstrations on September 9, thus ordering; “We are demonstrating in full force at the Turkish Embassy on the 18th September. Hon. Fadhil is in charge of this demonstration. PLU better do a good job. My order will not change this time. Instead, we will arrest ANY Turkish agent who says anything different!” Gen. Muhoozi roared on September 9. Fadil then swung into action to execute the order immediately by inviting PLU coordinators for a “strategic planning meeting”. Fadil announced on September 9: “As instructed by our Chairman Patriotic League of Uganda @mkainerugaba that we hold a full force demonstration at the Turkish Embassy on 18th/September/2026 […] I invite all the appointed and acting regional and sub-regional PLU coordinators for a strategic planning meeting at the PLU Secretariat [in] Naguru [a Kampala upscale suburb], tomorrow Thursday 10th at exactly midday. Please attend and keep time.” Gen. Muhoozi has also threatened to cancel all infrastructure construction contracts the Government of Uganda has signed with its Turkish counterpart; although legal experts fear such cancellations would reward Turkey handsomely to the detriment of the Ugandan tax payer.
