University of Belize School of Medicine holds 1st White Coat Ceremony

By Zoila Palma: The University of Belize School of Medicine (UBSoM) marked a significant milestone in the development of Belize’s medical education with the hosting of its first-ever White Coat Ceremony at the University of Belize Conference Centre on the Belmopan Campus.

The ceremony held on September 8 celebrated seven medical students as they transition from preclinical studies into the clinical clerkship phase of their medical education. The transition marks the point at which students begin applying the medical knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom within supervised patient-care settings.

The white coat serves as a symbol of the students’ academic progression while also representing the professionalism, compassion, integrity and responsibility expected of medical professionals entrusted with the care of patients.

As part of the ceremony, the seven students reaffirmed their commitment to the values and ethical principles of the medical profession. Their entry into the clinical environment brings new opportunities to learn directly from patient care, while also carrying greater responsibilities toward patients and the wider community.

The University of Belize School of Medicine celebrated the students’ achievement and reiterated its commitment to preparing competent, compassionate and socially responsible physicians.
