Wandile Mthiyane’s “Walk for Home” spans 1,600km as he highlights South Africa’s housing realities while raising funds for his Harvard University studies.
South Africa (13 May 2026) – Architect and social innovator Wandile Mthiyane is walking about 1,600km from Durban to Cape Town in a bold effort to raise awareness about South Africa’s housing crisis and funds for his studies at Harvard University.
The 32-year-old from KwaMashu has been accepted into Harvard’s prestigious Master’s in Design Engineering programme, which admits only around 25 students globally each year. His acceptance came after developing an AI-powered platform designed to help families living in informal settlements design and build safer, more dignified homes.
But despite the life-changing opportunity, Wandile still needs close to R3 million to fund his studies. Speaking during his “Walk for Home” campaign, Wandile said the journey is deeply personal.
“We’re looking at almost 30 years since democracy, and still over 2.5 million South Africans do not have a dignified place to call home.”
He reflected on growing up with his aunt in 2001, when officials marked their shack with the number 1167.
“A month and a half ago, I got a call that my aunt had passed away, and the first thing I thought about was that she passed away still living in that one-bedroom shack. For me, unfortunately, her story is not unique.”
Wandile said his work focuses on empowering communities to become active participants in solving the housing crisis, rather than waiting decades for assistance.
“What I’m advocating for is serviced land with proper infrastructure, while families are empowered to design and build their own homes.”
He believes this approach could also create employment opportunities for young people in South Africa through community-led construction projects. Throughout the walk, Wandile says he has experienced both the harsh realities of inequality and the kindness of ordinary South Africans.
“Strangers have turned me into family. I’ve realised that home is not luxury, it’s belonging.”
He added that one of the biggest challenges communities face is not only housing, but also access to water and sanitation infrastructure.
“People can build homes, but without proper plumbing systems and running water, living conditions remain extremely difficult.”
The journey has not been without setbacks. Wandile recently had to pause the walk after suffering injuries near Port St Johns when a wave knocked him onto rocks during a break at the beach. Thankfully, after a week of recovery, he is back on the road.
For Wandile, the bigger message behind the walk is to remind people that South Africans cannot afford to wait for change.
“Be the change that you want to see. Our parents and grandparents have spent their whole lives waiting. We’re the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Wandile hopes to reach Cape Town by Youth Day on 16 June, continuing his mission to advocate for dignified housing for all South Africans.
