Vipers SC midfielder Karim Watambala has opened up about the gruelling physical and mental toll of the just-concluded season, describing it as a tough campaign that pushed the Venoms to their absolute limits before they ultimately retained the Uganda Premier League title.
Despite a punishing schedule that threatened to derail their season in the second round, Vipers crossed the finish line to secure silverware, largely thanks to Watambala’s own talismanic performances.
The midfield maestro enjoyed a breathtaking individual campaign, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists to anchor the Kitende-based side’s championship charge.
Speaking after the trophy presentation, a visibly exhausted but ecstatic Watambala admitted that the sheer volume of fixtures across both the league and the Uganda Cup nearly broke the squad’s resolve.
“It’s been a hard and tough season. It became very difficult in the second round,” Watambala confessed.
“We had a lot of games and at some point, the bodies were overworked and the energy levels were going down, but we managed to win the trophy and we are happy for that.”
The Venoms had to navigate a congested fixture list, battling on multiple fronts with a relatively thin core of players. The lack of squad rotation meant the heavy lifting fell on a select few.
“We had back-to-back big games; it was hectic and tough. It was the same crop of players showing up in all these games,” Watambala added.
The midfield engine room was where the battle was won and lost for Vipers. Watambala, who bore the brunt of the minutes, admitted that he personally had to dig deep into his reserves to keep the club’s title defence alive.
“Especially me, I have played several games in the league and Uganda Cup and at some point, the energy levels were going low but I am happy we won the trophy.”
Watambala’s ability to find the back of the net and create goals while operating under extreme fatigue cements his status as a frontrunner for the footballer of the season accolades.
With the league title safely tucked away in the St. Mary’s Stadium trophy cabinet, Watambala and his teammates have earned a much-needed respite.
However, as a champion, the rest will be short-lived, as he is part of the Uganda Cranes squad that will be engaged during the international break.
For now, the Venoms can celebrate a triumph born out of pure resilience.
