Some California commuters got a shock during their morning commute when a train conductor gave them a ride that could have been a scene straight out of an action movie!
According to Fox 2 San Francisco, a video has just been released of a San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency light rail train coming out of a tunnel and hitting a curve at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour just after 8:30 in the morning. And while some of the passengers might have appreciated getting to work a few minutes early on that September 24 trip, they were shocked to learn that while the train sped down the track, the driver appeared to be falling asleep at the wheel.
Footage from the scene showed frightened passengers being thrown from side to side inside the train car, with some falling to the floor. Meanwhile, the conductor looks like she’s nodding off – that is, until a sudden jolt appears to wake her up.
After speeding past a station with waiting passengers and narrowly missing an oncoming car, the conductor then stops the train and tells the commuters to calm down, blaming the speedy ride on a faulty emergency brake.
“I’m sorry, relax, relax, relax. We didn’t crash,” the conductor can be heard telling passengers in the video.
According to ABC News, one passenger says they suffered a concussion during the trip.
An internal investigation by transit agency officials found that there were no mechanical issues with the train that day and determined the cause of the incident to be related to “operator fatigue.”
According to Fox 2 San Francisco and other local news sources, the conductor has been placed on “non-driving” status. The transportation agency is also looking to put processes in place to make sure life-threatening incidents like this don’t happen again.
