Your smart meter can reveal what’s driving up your BEL bill

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Wondering which appliance is eating up your electricity? Belize Electricity Limited says the answer may be right outside your home.

At a media session last week, BEL demonstrated how customers can use the Smart AMI meters installed at their homes to keep an eye on their own power usage.

AMI stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure. Unlike older meters, these devices record consumption electronically and send the readings back to BEL remotely, without the need for a meter reader to visit.

BEL Energy Audit Officer Ezar Pol walked the media through how customers can read the meters and follow their consumption in real time. That means homeowners can watch how their usage changes when they switch on an air conditioner, a water heater or other high demand appliances.

For customers trying to understand a high bill, that kind of visibility can make it easier to spot the culprits and adjust habits to save money.

BEL says the meters also give customers a way to verify their own consumption, adding a layer of transparency between the company and the people it serves.
