By Zoila Palma: Rising utility and butane costs contributed to higher household expenses in May 2026, according to new figures from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The SIB reported that the category “Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels” increased by 2.2 percent compared to May 2025. The rise was attributed mainly to higher electricity rates, increased water tariffs, and more expensive liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Data from SIB showed that the average price of a 100-pound cylinder of LPG increased by $7.83 over the past year. Consumers paid an average of $137.33 in May 2026, compared to $129.50 during the same period in 2025.
Housing-related expenses were among the three major categories identified by the SIB as key drivers behind the country’s overall inflation rate of 4.3 percent in May.
