As AI Reshapes Music, a New Awards Show Asks Who Gets to Be Called an Artist

Artificial intelligence is no longer sitting quietly behind the scenes of the music industry. It is writing, producing, shaping voices, and influencing how songs are created. Now, it is stepping onto its own red carpet.

This November, the Sonic Intelligence Academy (SIQA) will host the inaugural AI Music Awards (AIMAs) in Downtown Los Angeles, bringing together artists, creators, executives, technologists, and fans for a two day celebration of the newly evolving relationship between people and artificial intelligence in music. The SIQA Summit will take place November 12, 2026 followed by the awards ceremony on November 13, at The Mayan.

But beyond the awards, the event reflects a much larger cultural shift. As AI becomes more present in creative spaces, the music industry is being forced to reconsider questions that once felt simple, such as, Who created the song? What makes someone an artist? Where does technology end and human expression begin?

The organization recently launched the SIQA Verified Registry,a system designed to identify how artificial intelligence was used in a piece of music. Instead of placing every AI involved song under one label, the registry classifies music as AI-Assisted, Human + AI Hybrid, or Fully AI-Generated, based on creator disclosure and SIQA review.

That distinction matters because the future of AI music may be less about choosing between humans and machines and more about understanding how the two are working together.

For some creators, AI may function as another tool inside a humanly creative process. For others, it may become central to everything from vocals to production to songwriting. And as those lines continue to move, transparency becomes part of the conversation.

SIQA’s companion Verified app is designed to allow listeners to identify a song and see how AI was involved in its creation, bringing provenance into an era where the origin of what we hear may not always be obvious immediately.

The inaugural AIMAs will recognize work across 25 categories, including AI Song of the Year, AI Artist of the Year, AI Album of the Year, AI Producer of the Year, and genre categories spanning R&B, hip-hop, gospel, pop, country, jazz, and more. Nominees are drawn from artists verified through the SIQA Registry, with most awards determined by verified artists themselves.

The ceremony will also feature hybrid human-and-AI performances, placing the relationship between technology and human creativity directly onstage.

That may be the most interesting part of the event, because the future of music may not simply be about AI replacing human creativity. It may be about artists deciding how much of themselves they want technology to amplify, assist, imitate, or transform. The bigger conversation is that the AI Music Awards arrives at a time when the music industry is still defining the rules of this new creative era.

Questions around authorship, ownership, disclosure, artistic credit, and authenticity are not going to disappear as the technology improves. But the more personal question is “What happens to the identity of the artist when creativity itself begins to evolve?”

The inaugural AI Music Awards will take place November 13, 2026, at The Mayan in Downtown Los Angeles, following the SIQA Summit on November 12. The ceremony will also be available through a global livestream. As AI continues to reshape music, the industry is not only deciding what the future will sound like, but it is deciding who and what gets to create it.
