By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize is among 23 countries participating in the 2026 call for UNESCO’s Memory of the World Regional Register for Latin America and the Caribbean, as the programme receives a record number of nominations.
According to UNESCO, Belize submitted one nomination for consideration in this year’s regional process.
Across Latin America and the Caribbean, a total of 87 applications were received, representing a 21 percent increase compared to 2025 and setting a new record for the regional programme.
The Memory of the World Programme seeks to promote the preservation of valuable documentary heritage and improve access to collections considered important to the history and collective memory of societies.
Belize’s participation places the country alongside some of the region’s largest nations in seeking recognition for documentary heritage.
Brazil submitted the largest number with 18 nominations, followed by Colombia with 11 plus a joint nomination, Argentina with 10 plus a joint nomination, and Bolivia with nine. Other Caribbean participants include Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica, which is participating through a joint nomination with the United Kingdom and Canada.
Belize’s nomination will now move into the evaluation stage.
The submissions are expected to be evaluated during the 26th Annual Meeting of MOWLAC, scheduled for around November 2026. The exact date and venue are still to be confirmed.
