BENJANI Mwaruwari’s life at Highlanders has started on a positive note after he guided his side to a 1-0 victory against old rivals Dynamos in the Jairos Jiri Charity Cup match played at Barbourfields Sunday.

Bosso’s win was enabled by Benjamin Odeugun, who scored the crucial goal for his side in the 51st minute, to earn the sweet victory.

Sunday’s match was more of a pre-season friendly for the two sides, which are rebuilding after fighting relegation last year.

For Mwaruwari, Sunday was his first match in Highlanders following his appointment last month.

Despite having trained with the team for just three weeks, the former Manchester City player was impressed with his side’s progress.

“This is an important fixture for either side, and winning it is good for us. I am more than happy with the performance I saw from the team, although we still have a lot of work to do.”

“Just hope we will work hard and I achieve what I want to achieve,” he said.

Mwaruwari is marking his return to the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League as head coach since parting ways with Ngezi Platinum Stars in 2022.

Meanwhile, his opposite number, Genesis Mangombe, was marking his return to Dynamos following his appointment as head coach last month.

The Dynamos gaffer returns for the second bite of the cherry at the club after serving in the same role in 2024.

Speaking after his defeat to Bosso, Mangombe believes there is a need to work on his team’s defence.

“Whenever we play Highlanders, we want to win, but in football any result is possible.

“The good thing is this is pre-season, and it’s a wake-up call to the boys to understand the pressure that is at the club.

“We have to improve on our defending, and that was part of this match to see where we are. So, we are going to work on those areas and make sure we come back stronger,” he said.

Dembare will be back in action in two weeks’ time when they face reigning league champions Scottland FC in the Castle Challenge Cup, scheduled to be played on the 1st of March at Rufaro Stadium.

The Challenge Cup will curtain-raise the 2026 top-flight league season, which is set to start in March.
