Zimbabwe exports US$11,7 million worth of goods to Europe in a month

ZIMBABWE exported goods worth US$11,7 million to the European Union (EU) in the month of March 2026 in a development which further demystifies the existence of economic sanctions against the African nation.

While Western powers state that “smart sanctions” aimed at leadership, Zimbabwe and regional partners argue they cripple the overall economy. In 2024–2025, the United States revoked its main Executive Orders but re-listed key officials under the Global Magnitsky Act, while the United Kingdom removed the last entries from its list in May 2025.

Some sections within Zimbabwe’s political rank and file still speculate that sanctions are just being eased on paper while remaining in force practically.

However, data shared by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) recently effectively dismisses the existence of economic sanctions.

“Zimbabwe’s exports to the European Union (EU) in March 2026 were Ferro-chromium (58.9%), Tobacco (34.7%), Chromium (1.6%) accounting for around 95.2% of the total value USD 11.7 million of goods exported to the EU,” said Zimstat.

Records show that in 2025 alone, Zimbabwe exported goods worth approximately US$559 million to the EU in 2025, maintaining a positive trade balance with a surplus of over US$242 million. Key exports are dominated by tobacco ($217 million), edible fruits/nuts ($113 million), iron and steel ($93 million), and precious metals.

Market watchers have credited the recovering trade ties between Zimbabwe and the EU to the government’s reengagement agenda.
