The body of Timothy Magambo, son of Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) Director Maj. Tom Magambo, has been flown back into the country following his tragic drowning in the United States last week.
Timothy, 18, died during a swimming outing in Long Island, New York, in an incident that has since drawn condolences from leaders, friends, and the public.
The development was confirmed by Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, former State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs.
“I wish to inform friends, relatives and well-wishers that we this morning at 2:00am received the remains of our beloved son, Magambo Timothy, who tragically drowned last week in the USA,” Balaam said.
A requiem Mass will be held today at 9:00am at Mbuya Catholic Parish in Kampala.
The body will thereafter be transported to Kisarabwire Village in Masindi Municipality, where a vigil will be held at the family home.
Burial is scheduled for Thursday at 2:00pm in Kisarabwire, located about 2 kilometres from Masindi Municipality.
Timothy had just completed his first year at the University at Albany, New York.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Saturday, May 16, when he went swimming with friends in the waters off Long Island.
Police indicate that Timothy had travelled with a group of seven friends from Shelter Island to Wade’s Beach, also known as Shell Beach.
The group later attempted to swim across a channel, during which Timothy became separated from the others.
His friends later realised he was missing and immediately alerted authorities, prompting a search and rescue operation.
His body was later recovered approximately 100 yards from where he was last seen.
Reports indicate that Timothy had been living with his mother in New York, where she works with the United Nations.
His death has cast a shadow of grief over the family and the wider community, with many describing him as a promising young man whose life was cut short.
