Towards the end of 2025, Brais Ninguén & Couto 90 unleashed their debut album Roots & Shadows on streaming and download platforms. Now the Spanish group returns with the vinyl edition, giving this deeply organic reggae set the warm analogue treatment it truly deserves. The album was recorded at Escusalla Sonora, a secluded rural studio in Galicia, far away from distractions and perfectly suited for the band’s earthy, live approach.

And you can hear that approach straight away. Bass, drums, and guitars were recorded together in real time, capturing the natural groove and chemistry of the musicians instead of polishing everything into something sterile. The sound stays rooted in classic reggae foundations, with Hammond organ, clavinet, and rich horn arrangements adding extra flavour throughout the ten tracks.

But Roots & Shadows doesn’t stay locked inside one lane. While roots reggae is clearly the backbone, the band isn’t afraid to stretch things out and also pulls in touches of psychedelic music, jazz, and even some progressive influences. The result feels fresh without losing that deep reggae spirit. Melodies breathe, riddims roll naturally, and the songs unfold in their own way instead of following safe, predictable formulas. it gives the album its own character and flow.

The title Roots & Shadows reflects the album’s deeper themes. The “roots” speak to the things that keep us connected, grounded, and moving toward something positive. The “shadows” point to the pressures and systems that disconnect people from each other and push society in colder, more selfish directions.

There are a few tracks that pull you in immediately. Deep Roots grabs you from the first spin, A Tree with its hypnotic vibe unfolds like a proper slow-burning roots tune, and Time carries a soulful vibe that oddly brings Amy Winehouse’s You Know I’m No Good to mind. Some of the other songs take a little longer to reveal themselves, rewarding listeners who give the album time to settle in properly.
