British man fined $15 000 for rifle seized at Vieux Fort port

A British national living in Laborie has been fined $15 000 after pleading guilty to firearm-related offences following the seizure of a rifle at the Vieux Fort Seaport.

According to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), the firearm was discovered during a joint operation carried out on Wednesday by the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit (South), the K-9 Unit and the Customs and Excise Preventative Unit.

The RSLPF said the operation formed part of intensified efforts to combat criminal activity and involved searches at targeted courier companies and cargo sheds in the Vieux Fort district.

Officers conducting a search at Shed 2 of the Vieux Fort Seaport found a rifle concealed within a shipment. The discovery was made in the presence of David Charles Mulvany, who was listed as the shipment’s consignee.

He was arrested and subsequently charged with possession of a firearm without a valid licence and importation of a firearm without a valid licence.

He appeared before the Second District Court today and pleaded guilty to both offences.

The court imposed a fine of $10 000 for possession of a firearm without a valid licence and a further $5 000 for importing a firearm without a valid licence.

The total fine of $15 000 was ordered to be paid immediately. In default of payment, Mulvany faces a prison sentence of five years.
