Ciceron Secondary dominates at Schools’ Science and Technology Fair

The National Schools’ Science and Technology Fair concluded with outstanding displays of innovation, creativity and scientific application from students across Saint Lucia, with Ciceron Secondary School emerging as the standout institution of the event.

Ciceron Secondary captured the prestigious Best Overall Project award with its entry, “Mathematics Disaster Management Online Program”, a project that also secured first place in the Secondary School Science and Technology category and earned the Award for Innovation Excellence, as well as the Motiellal Singh Award for Best Science and Technology Project.

At the secondary level, Saint Lucia Sports Academy claimed first place in the Environmental category with its project focusing on greywater feasibility and sustainability, while Micoud Secondary School and Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School placed second and third respectively.

In the Primary School division, Aux Lyons Combined School stood out, winning both the Science and Technology category and the title of Best Primary Project with its innovative “Crystal Palace: Glue Berry Hair Gel”. Meanwhile, Bouton RC Combined School secured first place in the Environmental category with “Birds of Bouton”, a project that also earned the Outstanding Research Award among the fair’s top honours.

At the Infant School level, Ciceron RC Combined School captured first place with “Fairy Gloss”, followed by Plain View Combined School and Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School.

The Post-Secondary category saw Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School securing both first and second place with projects “Biocup Seaweed” and “Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair”.

Special awards highlighted innovation in food science and creativity. Micoud Secondary School won the Food Science Award with “Ripe Banana Gummies”, while the Special Recognition Award went to Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre for its kombucha-based project, “Jupiter’s Drink”, praised for its scientific application and taste.

Additional top honours included the Outstanding Experiment Award, which went to Grand Riviere Primary School for “Uniform Rescue”, and the Allan Gabriel Award for Best Environmental Project, awarded to Aux Lyons Combined School.

Delivering remarks at the close of the event, Chief Education Officer Beverly Dieudonne described the experience as both uplifting and inspiring.

Anchored under the theme, “Igniting Young Minds to Power the Future,” the fair showcased a wide cross-section of student-led projects spanning environmental sustainability, food science, health and wellness and technological innovation.

According to Dieudonne, the theme was not merely symbolic but a reality that brought to life a powerful demonstration of possibility.

Throughout the exhibition, students from infant to post-secondary levels demonstrated their ability to apply scientific thinking to real-world challenges. “From our youngest learners conducting simple experiments, to our primary, secondary and tertiary students developing solutions… this fair has truly demonstrated that the future is already in capable hands.”

Projects ranged from environmentally focused innovations to advanced technological solutions, reflecting what Dieudonne described as “a strong culture of inquiry, creativity, and problem-solving among our students”.

She emphasised that this spirit of exploration lies at the heart of education transformation, adding, “This is exactly what it means to ignite young minds, giving them the opportunity to explore, to question, and to create solutions that matter.”

Addressing the participants directly, she praised their efforts and resilience, declaring, “To our students today, you are all champions.” She further encouraged them to remain committed to innovation and growth, urging, “Continue to dream, continue to experiment, and continue to push boundaries because you are the ones who will power the future of Saint Lucia and beyond.”
