Civil Society Demands World Bank Withdraw From So-Called “Board of Peace” And Terminate Facilitation Of Funding

Photos: Wikimedia Commons Amidst the illegal occupation, apartheid and ongoing genocide in Palestine, the Oakland Institute, together with over 190 civil society organizations and human rights advocates, denounces the World Bank’s role in advancing an unlawful plan for ‘reconstruction’ in Gaza by joining the founding executive Board of Peace (BOP) and its role as a limited trustee for the BOP-associated Gaza Reconstruction and Development (GRAD) Financial Intermediary Fund. The letter addressed to World Bank President Ajay Banga denounces the initiative for disregarding Palestinians’ rights to self-determination, reparations, and freedom from occupation, while becoming complicit in serious violations of international law. The Bank’s involvement enables impunity and entrenches Israel’s illegal military occupation and apartheid in Palestine. The letter urges the World Bank to immediately withdraw from the initiative and terminate the GRAD Fund; publicly recognize the illegitimacy of imposed reconstruction frameworks and that rebuilding of people’s lives and livelihoods cannot begin until the Israeli forces end the genocide of Palestinians and their occupation; and instead support a Palestinian-led process grounded in international law. We also call on the institution to condemn reprisals against Palestinian human rights defenders, cooperate with UN Special Procedures, and avoid participating in structures that undermine the UN multilateral system. The full letter outlines the legal, political, and ethical concerns in detail and calls for urgent action from the Bank’s leadership.Read the letter
