When five families in Strandfontein lost everything to a sudden blaze, the community stepped in, working side by side to help them rebuild.
Strandfontein, South Africa (18 April 2026) – On the 8th of April, places where families once gathered to rest and spend time together after long days were brought to ashes after a devastating fire tore through a row of humble homes. In a matter of moments, flames engulfed everything, stripping them of nearly all they owned and had worked so hard for.
The blaze razed five homes to the ground in the 7de Laan informal settlement in Strandfontein. By the time the fire was finally extinguished, the affected families were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
But alongside the heartbreak, there was hope.
Behind the scenes, members of the Hands and Feet’s Hope Centre, local community members, and partners worked around the clock to provide relief. While most of the displaced residents found temporary shelter with neighbours and family, Hands and Feet stepped in with meals, school uniforms, shoes, and clothing, all while actively working to secure and purchase starter packs to help them rebuild their homes.
And after a long wait, their hopes and prayers have been fulfilled because a community’s strength shines brightest in the wake of tragedy.
Over the last 48 hours, the organisation’s Hope Men Youth, Hope Men, and local residents united to rebuild homes for the five families.
A heartwarming video shared online on Sunday captured the beautiful sight of everyone pitching in, working side by side to turn raw materials into safe, sturdy homes. Parents, children, and grandparents who had lost everything and faced an uncertain tomorrow finally have a roof over their heads and a safe place to call home once again.
Hands and Feet thanked everyone who dug deep and gave back towards changing their fate and circumstances.
“Thank you to everyone who sowed finances and gave their time, sweat, and heart to restore these lives. We are truly stronger together.”
