When a sudden health scare left Nathan Gardiner helpless on the side of the road, Cape Town Fire Officer Pamela Zotwa stepped in to drive his vehicle, safely deliver his passengers, and keep him conscious.
Cape Town, South Africa (28 May 2026) – Few things jar us back into appreciating the true value of our lives quite like a sudden health scare.
When Nathan Gardiner, a resident of Eersterivier in Cape Town, found himself battling with severe nausea and deteriorating health while trying to get through the drop-offs of his lift club, a calm hero came in to help him when he was at his weakest.
In the early hours of Friday, 22 May, shortly after midnight, Nathan woke up feeling extremely nauseous, which led to repeated vomiting. Unsure of the cause, he drank some water and returned to bed.
“The same symptoms occurred again at around 2:30 am and 3:30 am, and by then, I had started feeling very weak. After drinking more water, I felt slightly better,” he shares in a Facebook post.
At around 4:30 am, Nathan gathered up the strength to prepare for work even though he still did not feel well. But he decided to continue because he had people depending on him through his lift club.
“I informed my passengers that I was unwell and that I would only be dropping them off before seeking medical attention.”
While driving from Eersterivier, headed in the direction of the Ottery Fire Station, Nathan suddenly became extremely nauseous again, feeling feverish, weak, and disoriented. He managed to pull over just before his vision became blurred and struggled to remain focused.
It was not long after that moment that Nathan was approached by a well-presented lady who calmly identified herself as a fire officer named Officer Pamela Zotwa and offered to help.
Though he was disoriented, Nathan recalls how Officer Zotwa immediately stepped in with professionalism, kindness, and calmness to assist him.
“She drove my vehicle, safely dropped off my passengers at their workplaces, and continuously spoke to me to monitor my awareness and condition. She asked all the right questions in order to assess how best to assist me, while maintaining a calm and reassuring presence throughout.”
She further drove Nathan to the fire department and ensured that he received medical attention by Officer Craig Apollis before continuing with her own duties.
Nathan later learned that Officer Zotwa had been on her way to work, travelling by public transport and on foot from Eersterivier. She still had quite a distance to walk to get to work when she saw him in distress.
“I could not help but admire her bravery, especially as a woman travelling alone in the dark, and yet she still chose to put her own safety aside to assist a complete stranger in need.”

Moved by Zotwa’s compassion and bravery as well as Apollis’ professionalism and care, Nathan couldn’t help but express his immense gratitude online, in hopes that the officers would see his message.
“People like Officer Pamela Zotwa and Officer Craig Apollis are true examples of what our country needs. As ordinary citizens of Cape Town, we are grateful for public servants who genuinely care about people and carry out their duties with pride, dignity, and humanity – both on and off duty.”
“You may very well have saved my life that morning. I do not know what could have happened had you not been there at that exact moment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
And that right there is one of those unique everyday moments that speak to the compassion and human kindness of our people. Moments where someone stops, takes notice, acts, and even saves a life.
We salute Officers Pamela Zotwa and Craig Apollis from the Ottery Fire Station, and wish Nathan a speedy recovery to good health.
