Corozal health services promotes Breastfeeding support and awareness

By Zoila Palma:  The Corozal District Health Services, in collaboration with the Instituto de Nutrición de Centro América y Panamá (INCAP), hosted a breastfeeding awareness and support event aimed at highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding and providing mothers with information and encouragement throughout their breastfeeding journeys.

The event brought together a pediatrician, medical doctor, nutritionist and other health officials who shared guidance on the nutritional and health benefits of breastfeeding, while emphasizing the importance of providing mothers with adequate support from families, communities and healthcare providers.

Mothers attending the event also had an opportunity to connect, share their personal experiences and engage in discussions in a supportive environment.

The initiative formed part of activities surrounding World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1 to 7, which is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Ministries of Health and civil society organizations around the world.

The 2026 theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” focuses on expanding proven approaches that improve breastfeeding outcomes and strengthening the support available to mothers.

According to WHO and UNICEF, exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months has increased globally from about 37 percent in 2012 to more than 47 percent today.

However, progress remains uneven, with many mothers still lacking access to quality breastfeeding support.

Health officials point to skilled counselling, community-based support, maternity protection and supportive workplace policies as among the measures that can help more women successfully breastfeed.
