Daniel Meighan remanded for alleged sexual assault of a minor

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 43-year-old security technician was remanded to the Belize Central Prison following his arraignment in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a charge of sexual assault involving a minor.

Daniel Vincent Meighan, a resident of La Democracia Village, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 to face a single count of assault of a child by penetration. The charge stems from allegations that in June 2026, Meighan intentionally penetrated and fondled a female child who was 12 years and 4 months old.

Due to the severity of the allegation, no plea was taken from Meighan during the proceedings.

The prosecution strongly objected to granting bail, emphasizing the young age of the victim, the gravity of the charge—which carries a potential sentence ranging from 12 years to life imprisonment upon conviction—the strength of the evidence, and the risk that the defendant might attempt to interfere with the ongoing police investigation if released.

In an unexpected turn of events, Meighan told the court he was willing to forgo a bail application at that time. He stated that he understood everything happening, maintained his innocence, and requested a quick trial while offering to go on remand in the interim. He added that prior to a police interview conducted while in custody, he had not been given details regarding the case against him.

After considering the prosecution’s arguments, the Senior Magistrate denied bail and informed Meighan that he maintains the right to apply for High Court bail through an attorney. Meighan was subsequently remanded to the Belize Central Prison, with his next court appearance scheduled for November 13, 2026.
