The death toll in the shooting incident at Hennenman in the Free State has risen to five.

A police officer allegedly shot five people, killing three and wounding two at the weekend.

The police officer turned the gun on himself.

The officer allegedly opened fire during a gathering in the early hours of Sunday morning at Whittes Plots.

Police say the motive behind the shooting still remains unclear.

Meanwhile, one of the survivors of the shooting says the incident unfolded without warning.

Willem Willemse, the owner of the house where the shooting took place, says the alleged gunman entered the house and opened fire on family members.

Willemse says he tried to protect one of the victims during the attack but was also shot in the process.

“He just fired shots, I don’t know how many bullets maybe six or eight, I don’t know because I was pressed against them, I also tried to pull one of them out the fire and raised my hand to stop him and he shot me on the finger.”
