Msunduzi Municipality moves to block Wednesday workers’ strike
The municipality is seeking an interdict against SAMWU, IMATU and other respondents
The Msunduzi Municipality has turned to the Labour Court in a bid to prevent a planned workers’ strike set for Wednesday.
The municipality is seeking an interdict against South African Municipal Worker’s Union (SAMWU), Independent Municipal Allied Trade Union (IMATU) and other respondents, arguing that the strike is unlawful and unprotected.
The move follows a strike notice issued by the unions last week, with demonstrations already taking place at the Mangwayi Depot.
SAMWU’s chairperson in Msunduzi Brandon George says one of the main burning issues at the moment is the updating of grading workers from a Task three pay grade to a Task seven.
“We have appealed on numerous occasions to the employer to say at least send these job descriptions for re-evaluation, restart the process, let the job evaluation committee make an assessment and let them do an analysis in terms of what employers are doing today on the ground opposed to what they used to do 15-years ago.”
