*Dominic Antoine Jr. had one of the most remarkable college application seasons in recent memory. The Fremont High School senior from East Oakland — nicknamed “Pooda” — earned acceptance from every school he applied to, all 31 of them, while carrying a 4.3 GPA through his final year.
When National College Decision Day arrived on May 1, Antoine made his choice official: Louisiana State University, where he will study biology on a pre-med track, California Post reports. LSU was the first school to extend him an offer and backed it with a merit-based scholarship that made the decision feel right.
“I knew where my heart was, and I trusted my gut,” Antoine told KTVU.
Antoine cast a wide net during the application process, targeting universities such as UCLA and UC Berkeley alongside Historically Black Colleges and Universities through the Common Black College Application. Howard University, Tennessee State University, Morgan State University, a nd Syracuse University were among the finalists he seriously weighed. Not one school turned him away.
His reputation at Fremont extended well beyond the classroom. Principal Nidya Baez highlighted Antoine’s dedication to fellow students, noting, “He fights for inclusion of students with disabilities in activities and goes out of his way to make them feel welcomed.”
College and Career Readiness Specialist Jaliza Collins pointed to qualities that set him apart from the start. “He also leads with empathy and humility, which makes him that much more special,” Collins said.
Antoine competed in basketball, football, and track during his high school years, and it was the physical toll of those sports that quietly shaped his career ambitions. “A lot of back and forward to orthopedics, getting MRIs, getting x-rays, getting checkups,” he recalled. “I feel so relieved after being helped.” Becoming an orthopedic surgeon is now his goal.
