By Zoila Palma: European Union Ambassador to Jamaica, Belize and The Bahamas, Erja Askola, began her mission to Belize on August 13 with discussions focused on sustainable transportation, constitutional reform and indigenous rights.

Askola said her visit began with a “productive catch-up meeting” with Minister of Constitution, Indigenous Affairs and Transportation Dr. Louis Zabaneh and his team.

She said the discussions centered on the EU-Belize partnership and efforts to support Belize’s transition toward a more sustainable and modern public transportation system.

Askola highlighted the introduction of EU-funded electric buses in Belize, noting that “the first EU-funded e-buses are already roaming in Belize City and beyond.”

The meeting also addressed Belize’s ongoing constitutional reform process, indigenous rights, and the importance of ensuring inclusive public consultations and information sharing.

The EU Ambassador said the discussions demonstrated the importance of strong partnerships in advancing meaningful change.
