By Zoila Palma: Last week, teams from the European Union (EU) and the Organization of American States (OAS) visited the Adjacency Zone between Belize and Guatemala.
Since 2012, the EU has been the main provider of financial assistance to the OAS for all the important work it carries out ahead of the ruling by the International Court of Justice on the border dispute.
“We support the mission of the OAS for various reasons, among them to promote dialogue and cooperation between Belize and Guatemala at different levels. Also, to ensure the OAS can fulfil its special mandate to carry out impartial verifications of any incident reported by the States,” the EU noted.
The EU says that it also works with OAS to promote meaningful community projects that strengthen peaceful coexistence and maintain regional stability while awaiting the ICJ ruling.
The EU says that it continues to uphold a Peaceful Resolution of the Belize- Guatemala Territorial Differendum to help the economies, trade and cooperation in both countries.
