Gobabis to host MTC volleyball league for first time

The MTC Volleyball National League heads to Gobabis tomorrow for the first time as teams contest round five of the 2026 season, with valuable points at stake in both the title race and the relegation battle.

Although Gobabis does not have a club competing in the national league, the Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) selected the town as part of its strategy to grow the sport beyond its traditional strongholds.

In an Interview with Desert FM yesterday, NVF chief executive Festus Hamukwaya described round four at Rundu as a success.

“The round four at Rundu was very exciting and it was indeed a very good turnout. Rundu is where most of our fan base is, so the games were spectacular indeed.”

He said the federation’s annual congress, held alongside the league round, also produced important resolutions.

“We made tangible resolutions as far as development, governance and structure are concerned, while also looking at where we want volleyball to go, with events such as Los Angeles 2028, Dakar and the Olympic Games all forming part of the discussions.”

The action begins at 09h00 at Legare Stadium with a full programme of men’s and women’s matches.

Explaining why Gobabis was chosen to host the round, Hamukwaya said: “One of our strategic objectives is to take volleyball to the people. That is why the national league is played once a month across towns in Namibia so that people can see how volleyball is growing.”

He added that the federation hopes to establish a regional association in the Omaheke region.

“We realised Omaheke is one of the regions where we don’t have a regional association. We have three academies and a few upcoming volleyball teams there, so we decided to take the games to Gobabis to motivate and inspire them.”

With only a few rounds remaining before the league concludes in October, Hamukwaya expects an exciting finish.

“The competition is very, very tight now. Everybody doesn’t want to be relegated, while the teams also want to finish in the top two because that will qualify them for the Zone Six Indoor Club Championship.”

He identified the opening men’s clash between defending champions Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) and newcomers Brutal Pack Volleyball Club as one of the weekend’s standout fixtures.

“Brutal Pack is the new kid on the block, but they mean business. When you’re facing the defending champions, you have to bring your A-game, so that’s going to be a very exciting match.”

Hamukwaya also highlighted the women’s matches between Unam Queens and NamPol Volleyball Club, and NDF Phoenix against Kudus Sports Club, as key fixtures.

He said taking the league around the country continues to benefit local economies while growing the sport.

“Every region benefits. We book accommodation, we hire security guards and cleaners, and SMEs are able to sell during the games. The more we take volleyball to every town, the more people say they also want a volleyball team.”

Hamukwaya urged residents of Gobabis and surrounding communities to support the event.

“I would like to urge the Omaheke region, Gobabis in particular, and the nearby towns and villages to make their way to Gobabis on Saturday to come and watch volleyball, support us and see what our sportsmen and women are capable of doing.”
