By Zoila Palma: The Government of Belize is continuing to strengthen national preparedness and response efforts as increased regional sargassum activity affects the country’s coastline.
Through the National Sargassum Task Force (STF), co-chaired by the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation and the Ministry of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations, authorities are coordinating measures aimed at reducing the environmental, economic and social impacts of sargassum influxes.
The STF is leading response efforts in key coastal and tourism destinations, including Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Seine Bight, Hopkins and Placencia. Government officials say the coordinated approach focuses on improving shoreline management and maintaining the quality of Belize’s beaches and coastal environments.
To improve operational readiness, the Government has expanded its sargassum response fleet with the purchase of a Barber Beach Rake and a New Holland Tractor. The equipment is being deployed in Placencia to support shoreline cleanup efforts while reducing beach erosion. The Placencia Village Council welcomed the support, describing the machinery as essential in addressing ongoing sargassum challenges.
Placencia Village Chairman Warren Garbutt said the community recognizes there is no single solution to the issue and remains committed to collaboration. He stated that local stakeholders are prepared to work alongside government agencies to identify effective and efficient methods to improve beach conditions and enhance visitors’ experiences.
Additional financial support is also being provided to affected communities and tourism stakeholders.
The Belize Tourism Board has issued cleanup support allocations to municipalities in priority areas and is testing new cleanup machinery through a pilot project at inland and island destinations.
Meanwhile, the Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future has approved a BZ$290,000 special grant to assist private sector stakeholders impacted by sargassum during June and is supporting consultancy work toward finalizing a National Sargassum Response Plan for Belize.
