Helio Varela never dreamt of scoring a World Cup goal

Cape Verde forward Helio Valera came off the bench to score the equaliser as the Blue Sharks played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with two-time World Champions Uruguay.

A point, their second in as many matches on their debut leaves them with an opportunity to reach the knock out stages if they overcome Saudi Arabia in their final group match.

Valera, scoring on his debut never dreamt of scoring in such a high-profile match.

“I had dreamed of this, but I never imagined it would happen this way,” Varela told Fifa.com.

“Scoring my first goal for the national team on my World Cup debut is incredible. I have no words,” he added.

His coach Bubista hailed his players for the resilience insisting they played their hearts out and deserved the point.

“I want to congratulate the team and all of our people for the way we played, with our hearts. We finished the match under a lot of difficulty, with many players already suffering from cramps,” said Bubista.

“But our team was brave throughout, always looking to win the game, and that makes us very happy. We trust all of our players. We always make changes, and our team continues to approach matches with the desire to win and with good organization. We have to be pleased with what we achieved today.”

The Blue Sharks will join the round of 32 if they beat Saudi Arabia in the final match.
