International News: Mexico’s President to attend World Cup final following invitation from Trump

By Zoila Palma:  Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that she plans to attend the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday after accepting an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump.

 Speaking to reporters on Friday during an event in Quintana Roo, Sheinbaum said she decided to attend because the invitation came directly from the U.S. president.

She also noted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to be present. Sheinbaum said she will provide additional details in a recorded message before the event and return to Mexico on Monday to resume her official duties.

The match will mark the first World Cup game Sheinbaum has attended during the tournament. She previously declined to attend the opening match in Mexico City on June 11, choosing instead to give her ticket to an Indigenous girl who plays football. However, the Mexican leader participated in fan festival events held during matches involving the Mexican national team.

The World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada, has served as a symbol of regional cooperation despite ongoing political tensions among the three neighboring countries.
