By Zoila Palma: A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in southern California today, according to a statement from the base.
The incident occurred at 11:20 a.m. local time, sending a massive plume of black smoke into the air that was visible for miles, BBC reports.
Officials did not immediately provide information on injuries or the condition of those on board.
The base said emergency crews responded immediately to the crash site and that the situation remains ongoing. A spokesperson for Edwards Air Force Base declined to provide additional details.
In a later update, the base announced that the airfield had been closed, all inbound aircraft were being diverted, and non-commercial visitor passes had been suspended to allow emergency responders to focus on the incident.
Aerial footage from the scene showed a charred and smoking area where the aircraft went down. The B-52 Stratofortress, manufactured by Boeing and commonly known as the “BUFF,” has been in service with the U.S. military since the 1950s. The long-range strategic bomber is capable of carrying a payload of up to 70,000 pounds, including conventional bombs and nuclear cruise missiles, and is designed for extended operations through mid-air refueling.
Edwards Air Force Base is located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert. Several lawmakers expressed concern following the crash.
