*Issa Rae is speaking candidly about a shift she says is impossible to ignore in Hollywood. In a recent conversation with The Wrap, the actress and creator described the entertainment industry as being in an “identity crisis,” with diverse voices losing ground on screen and in the rooms where decisions get made.
Rae, who built her platform through the YouTube series “Awkward Black Girl,” said the project emerged from a clear void in the industry. “I started ‘Awkward Black Girl’ because there was a dearth of representation in the industry, and it felt like this was my opportunity to put an archetype into the space that didn’t exist at the time,” she said, per Variety.
The gains made since then, she suggested, have proven fragile. “And now, even after so much progress, we’re kind of back to limited representation and having to stake claim of our stories. We’re back where we started, in a way, but wiser.”
Rae pointed to the broader pullback on DEI as a root cause of the current climate. Funding for projects centered on diverse perspectives has dried up, and she revealed that some executives of color have distanced themselves from her work entirely, telling her they “can’t cosign” her projects.
“I’m seeing it. Just blatantly. People aren’t investing like they were before,” she said. “[DEI] has changed meanings and has become a bad word.”
Faced with that reality, Rae has shifted how she positions her work without abandoning what drives it. She said creators now have to think carefully about how projects are framed at the pitch stage.
“You have to be smarter about how you package and market [projects],” she explained. “You tell them, ‘It’s not a show about a Black woman, it’s a show about class.’ As icky as that might feel, it gets the show sold.”
Her dedication to inclusive storytelling, she made clear, is non-negotiable and will “never” change.
