*A federal judge has ruled that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC cannot bear President Donald Trump‘s name without approval from Congress, ordering that Trump’s name be removed from the building and official materials within 14 days.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper said in his decision that because Congress established and named the Kennedy Center as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, only Congress has the authority to change its name. Cooper also ruled that the center cannot be closed for renovations tied to the renaming dispute. He also blocked closure of the facility.
Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty, who filed the lawsuit challenging the name change, praised the ruling as a victory for the rule of law and the preservation of the center’s historic mission.
“The Kennedy Center belongs to the American people,” Beatty said, arguing that the board overstepped its authority. In her lawsuit, she maintained that Congress explicitly created the institution as a living memorial to Kennedy and that any attempt to rename it without legislative approval undermines its core purpose.
Beatty also disputed claims that the board’s vote to add Trump’s name was unanimous, saying she was muted and prevented from voicing opposition during the process. Some critics felt that Beatty pushing the issue was a lost cause, but she persevered.
The judge agreed with Beatty’s central argument, affirming that only Congress has the power to rename the federally established institution.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump suggested he may distance himself from the Kennedy Center after a federal judge blocked his effort to rename the institution after himself and halted plans to close it for renovations.
“The marble is in terrible shape, the pipes are gone, the air conditioning and heating systems are 65 years old and no longer functioning. It was all being torn out to be replaced by brand new Carrier Equipment, at the highest standard,” Trump wrote. “Now that won’t happen anymore because a Judge, whose wife is an anti-Trump Hater, and he is too, decided, unprecedentedly, to not allow a desperately needed Building Renovation to go forward.”
Meanwhile, Kennedy Center Executive Director Charles Matthew Floca warned of financial consequences tied to the controversy, citing cancellations and political fallout that have already contributed to revenue losses. Floca said high-profile events associated with Trump had previously boosted the venue’s earnings.
