In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), United States Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have been charged with a series of criminal charges in New York.
“Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been indicted in the Southern District of New York.”
Bondi stated that Maduro has been charged with Narco-Terrorism Conspiracy, Cocaine Importation Conspiracy, Possession of Machineguns and Destructive Devices, and Conspiracy to Possess Machineguns and Destructive Devices against the United States.
In her statement, she praised US president Donald Trump for “having the courage to demand accountability on behalf of the American People” and thanked the US military for what she described as a “highly successful mission”.
Her comments followed after United States president Donald Trump announced early on January 3 that the US carried out a “large-scale strike against Venezuela” and that Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been captured and removed from the country.
Several explosions struck the capital, Caracas, this morning. Venezuelan authorities have since declared a national state of emergency.
According to initial reports, several strategic locations were hit during the strikes. These include a military airfield in the centre of Caracas, La Carlota and the main military base of Fuerte Tiuna with several of the surrounding communities are without power.
