Strategic Partnership: South Korea and Tanzania Collaborate to Advance Rail Infrastructure and Economic Growth

The Tanzania Railways Corporation is actively strengthening its strategic business agreement with the Korea Railroad Corporation Joint Venture to accelerate the development of the nation’s railway infrastructure.
This partnership aligns with Tanzania’s core national strategies to modernize its transport infrastructure, a pivotal milestone in its journey toward achieving Upper-Middle-Income status under the National Vision 2050 (DIRA 2050).
Comprehensive Technology Transfer and Capacity Building
Under this collaborative framework, the Government of Tanzania is working in tandem with Korea Railroad Corporation Joint Venture (Korail JV) to integrate advanced railway operation and maintenance technologies.
Through this high-level exchange agreement, Korail has established itself as a cornerstone partner in the Tanzanian railway sector.
Beyond its active participation in the flagship Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, Korail aims to leverage this success to expand its footprint across the broader East African railway market, including potential networks in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan.
A key pillar of this bilateral cooperation is human capital development.
The partnership features extensive capacity-building initiatives, including specialized training programs for the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) employees.
These programs focus on strengthening the technical competencies of Tanzanian railway engineers, electrical train operators, and technicians, with a specific emphasis on the operation and maintenance of electric rolling stock and advanced power systems.
Cheil Engineering’s Strategic Supervision and Research
Representing the technical cornerstone of these initiatives, South Korea’s Cheil Engineering Company—operating under a joint venture with Korail, and with TRC—is currently overseeing the design review and construction supervision for the expansive Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) corridor connecting Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, as well as the Uvinza-to-Msongati line.
Mr. Younghak Choi, the SGR Project Manager for Cheil Engineering, noted in a recent interview that the company is also providing critical technical expertise for the Southern Corridor, which connects Mtwara Port on the Indian Ocean to Mbamba Bay on Lake Nyasa.
“In tandem with infrastructure development, Cheil Engineering has conducted extensive research across key economic sectors, including roads, bridges, water supply, sanitation, and environmental protection,” Mr. Choi stated.
He further revealed that the company has developed comprehensive strategic guide maps mapping Tanzania’s rich natural resources alongside its national road and rail networks to facilitate sustainable exploration and development.
Alignment with Tanzania Development Vision 2050
Tanzania officially launched its envisaged DIRA 2050. This long-term economic blueprint is designed to synchronize robust economic growth with the nation’s demographic trends, ensuring sustainable prosperity.
Infrastructure development remains a primary catalyst for Vision 2050.
Key priorities include the expansion of tarmac roads, bridges, and the ongoing construction of the SGR extending from the capital city of Dodoma to Kigoma on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
To date, this visionary framework has already catalyzed significant progress across public health, education, and nationwide transport connectivity.
