A 32-year-old man allegedly drove off with a Windhoek City Police Service vehicle before crashing it into a private property in Khomasdal on Tuesday morning.
According to a statement issued by the police, the man entered the Khomasdal city police office at around 07h25, claiming that he had been assaulted and robbed somewhere in Khomasdal and requested police assistance to apprehend the alleged suspect.
“Our members informed him to wait outside while arranging for someone to attend to him,” the statement says.
However, while leaving the office, the man allegedly took a vehicle key that had been left on a table, the statement reads.
“Members later realised that the key had been taken when they observed a police vehicle being driven out of the yard,” the police say.
Officers followed the vehicle and shortly afterwards discovered that it had crashed into a private property on Richardine Klopper Street in Khomasdal, a few metres away from the Khomasdal city police office.
“Both the vehicle and the property sustained multiple damages,” the statement says.
The police say no injuries were sustained by the suspect or by occupants of the property.
The statement says doctors from a mental hospital later confirmed that the suspect is a patient, adding that he is receiving medical attention.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
