Mark Fuhrman, the former LAPD detective who became one of the most polarizing figures in American legal history through his role in the O.J. Simpson murder trial, has died at 74. Deadline reports he passed away on May 12 in Idaho, following a battle with cancer.
After retiring from the LAPD in August 1995, Fuhrman carved out a post-law enforcement career in media and publishing. He wrote a string of true crime books and turned up regularly on radio and television. But no byline or broadcast ever overshadowed what happened in a Los Angeles courtroom in 1994.
Fuhrman was the detective who recovered a bloody glove from Nicole Brown Simpson’s property – evidence the prosecution believed would anchor their case against Simpson. Defense attorney Johnnie Cochran had a different read on the situation entirely.
The defense portrayed Fuhrman as an unrepentant racist, arguing he had planted the glove to frame Simpson. Fuhrman denied the accusations. “There was never a shred, never a hint, never a possibility, not a remote, not a million-, not a billion-to-one possibility I could have planted anything. Nor would I have a reason to,” he said in a 1996 interview.
The trial’s most unforgettable moment came when Simpson was asked to try on the bloody glove in open court. He struggled. The jury watched. Cochran made sure they didn’t forget it. “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit,” he said.
Simpson was acquitted of murdering Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman, who were stabbed to death outside Nicole’s Brentwood home in June 1994.
Simpson died on April 10, 2024, at age 76, from metastatic prostate cancer.
