‘War With Me And The Mother-In-Law’: Man charged with trying to light mother-in-law’s house on fire with her in it

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old construction worker accused of deliberately setting fires inside his former mother-in-law’s Belize City home has pleaded not guilty to two counts of arson in the High Court.

Sir Hugh Anthony Andrewin appeared unrepresented before Justice Nigel Pilgrim this week, where he was formally indicted on the two charges.

Justice Pilgrim strongly advised Andrewin to obtain an attorney, telling him that the allegations against him were “very serious offences.” The judge gave him approximately three months to seek legal representation and adjourned the matter until November 13, 2026.

Andrewin was further remanded to the Belize Central Prison, as he also has other pending matters before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for which he remains on remand.

The charges arise from two alleged incidents at a home on Flamboyant Street on June 11 and June 12, 2025.

Police allege that at about 10:00 p.m. on June 11, Andrewin arrived at the residence of his now former mother-in-law, pulled out a blue lighter and set fire to a sheet covering a grey loveseat valued at $400. The woman reportedly extinguished the fire before it could spread further.

Several hours later, at about 4:00 a.m. on June 12, the woman and her daughter were reportedly awakened by smoke and found a curtain and a green loveseat valued at $750 engulfed in flames. The fire also damaged aluminium louvre windows valued at $495.

The prosecution alleges that the second fire was set with the intention of endangering both women. Andrewin initially faced one arson charge in the Magistrate’s Court but was indicted on two counts when the matter reached the High Court.
