Matt Smith Explains What Really Drives Daemon Targaryen in Season 3 of ‘House of the Dragon’

For fans of House of the Dragon, Daemon Targaryen remains one of the most fascinating and unpredictable characters in the world of Westeros. He’s charismatic, dangerous, loyal, ruthless, and often impossible to pin down. While many viewers have spent years debating whether Daemon’s ultimate goal is power, actor Matt Smith sees the character through a very different lens.

During an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Smith reflected on Daemon’s motivations and challenged one of the most common assumptions fans make about the rogue prince.

“Lots of people ask me about his ambition,” Smith explained. “And I’ve never felt he had this great ambition to sort of rule. It wasn’t about that, because he plays by the beat of his own drum.”

Instead, Smith believes Daemon’s ambitions lie elsewhere.

“He’s got an ambition to sort of dominate through violence,” Smith continued. “And that’s when he really comes to life and is kind of at his best.”

It’s a revealing perspective on a character who has often been viewed as a political opportunist. While Daemon certainly seeks influence and authority throughout the series, Smith argues that traditional leadership or ruling from a throne has never been his true calling. Daemon thrives in conflict. Battlefields, duels, and moments of chaos are where he feels most alive.

Black Girl Nerds noted that violence often seems to be Daemon’s comfort zone—less a tool and more an extension of who he is.

“I feel like he sits in that comfort of violence,” BGN observed. “That is where he feels the most comfortable in his psyche and his personality.”

Smith agreed wholeheartedly.

“I know people like that. I’ve met them,” he said. “They’re really, you know, and they’re quite frightening beings. When you meet someone who’s really good at it, that’s what they’re good at. They go out and they seek it in life.”

That comparison helps explain why Daemon can be both magnetic and terrifying. Unlike many characters who resort to violence as a last option, Daemon often embraces it as his natural state. It’s where he understands the rules. It’s where he exerts control.

Yet despite his reputation as one of the most dangerous men in Westeros, Smith doesn’t believe violence is the only force guiding Daemon’s decisions.

When asked whether Daemon is driven more by love, ego, or survival at this stage of the story, Smith offered an answer that speaks to the character’s complexity.

“Probably all three things,” he said. “All enmeshed into one.”

Still, Smith pointed to one emotion that may sit deeper than Daemon would ever publicly admit.

“Even though he wouldn’t admit it, I think love is, or the instinct of sort of this divine love or whatever you want to call it, is a real driver.”

For all of Daemon’s swagger, pride, and brutality, Smith sees a man motivated by a profound emotional connection—particularly when it comes to Rhaenyra Targaryen.

“He thinks they are destined to lead and be as one, I think, and has always felt that,” Smith explained. “And I think that’s always been a driver.”

It’s an interpretation that reframes many of Daemon’s actions throughout the series. Beneath the impulsive decisions, violent outbursts, and relentless pursuit of control lies a man who genuinely believes in a shared destiny with Rhaenyra. His ego, his survival instincts, and his capacity for love aren’t separate motivations—they’re intertwined.

That duality is what continues to make Daemon one of the most compelling figures in George R.R. Martin’s world. He’s a warrior who seeks conflict, a prince who doesn’t necessarily crave a crown, and a man whose greatest strength and greatest weakness may be the same thing: his devotion to the people he loves.

As House of the Dragon continues to explore the devastating consequences of power, loyalty, and legacy, Smith’s insights offer a reminder that Daemon Targaryen is far more than a villain or an antihero. He is a man driven by contradictory impulses, forever caught between violence and love—and that’s exactly what makes him so dangerous.
