‘Maybe we’ll play with no defenders against Pirates!’ – Hunt
Stellenbosch FC Head coach Gavin Hunt is expecting a tough league encounter against Orlando Pirates next month.
Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt jokingly suggested he could field a team without defenders when his side faces Orlando Pirates, following their 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Cape Winelands outfit earned a valuable point at Loftus Versfeld, with Tshegofatso Mabasa converting a late penalty to secure the result.
Mabasa, currently on loan from Pirates, may have inadvertently handed his parent club an advantage in the title race, as the result helped the Buccaneers remain top of the standings.
After the hard-fought draw, Hunt turned his attention to the upcoming clash against Pirates in Cape Town and did so in light-hearted fashion.
“We’re still going to play Pirates down in Cape Town, so maybe it’ll be another one of these games,” Hunt said. “I don’t know… maybe we’ll play with no defenders next time,” he joked.
Despite the result, Hunt was full of praise for Sundowns, backing them to go all the way in continental competition.
“They’ve got a very strong squad,” he said. “I’m sure they’ll do well and I believe they can win the CAF Champions League this year.”
Hunt to haunt Pirates
The Betway Premiership title race remains finely poised, with Orlando Pirates and Sundowns locked in a tight battle. Hunt acknowledged the intensity of the contest and offered a neutral verdict.
“There’s a serious race going on between them and Pirates,” he added. “May the best team win.”
In recent weeks, Hunt has praised Pirates for their eye-catching football. He warned his side last week that if they don’t improve their defence, they might concede six goals against the Buccaneers.
