Ministry of Agriculture hosts soil sampling methodologies training in San Antonio, Cayo

By Zoila Palma: On August 4th 2026, a Soil Sampling Methodologies training was conducted in San Antonio, Cayo with the SAYAB Farmer’s Cooperative.

A total of 16 cooperative members comprising the SAYAB cooperative were present this morning in the execution of Soil Sampling Methodologies.

The cooperative was founded in 2017 as non-traditional producer of vegetables and spices such as arugula, thyme, basil and other nice spices that are very much used in both Belizean and American cuisine.

Today, Enrique Rivas and Israel Pech delivered a Soils Sampling Methodologies training; and their experiences so that the cooperative members would be able to make more educated decisions when it comes to their soils and fertilizer amendments.

Soils are very rich in nutrients nevertheless as years pass; the producers need to make better amendments to compensate for those that are being depleted by the different crops cultivated.

The Ministry says that the cooperative is now fully capable of doing their samples and ship them to the different laboratories to get the results of their soil samples.

Once this information is received, they will also get the recommendations from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries in the amends that they will need to conduct so they are safer and more productive in their production parcels.

The collaboration between MAFSNGI and IICA focuses on assisting farmers with the knowledge for them to make better decisions in their farms.

The event was coordinated with Dale Pech, extension officer of the COSAL Project for the Inter American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
