Power Dynamos Football Club secured vital maximum points with a commanding 3–0 victory over Kabwe Warriors FC at Railway Stadium in an eventful encounter that saw Lawrence Mulenga sent off, while midfielder Owen Tembo was forced to finish the match in goal.

Fresh from a 1–0 derby win over Nkana on Saturday, the league leaders did not have to wait long for the opener, as in-form Kenyan striker Moses Shumah found the back of the net just two minutes after kick-off, latching onto a defence-splitting pass from Fredrick Mulambia.

The pair were to combine again for Power’s second goal nine minutes later. Mulambia showcased his midfield brilliance, squaring the ball to Shumah, whose sublime finish left goalkeeper Mangani Banda helpless as Power doubled their advantage, with the striker extending his season tally to 20 goals to remain firmly in control of the Golden Boot race.

Warriors did not know what hit them as two turned into three for Power, thanks to a potential contender for goal of the season by midfielder Daniel Adoko in the 27th minute. The combative midfielder pounced on a loose ball in midfield and unleashed a thunderbolt into the roof of the net to seal the game with a third goal.

The home side tried to pull one back and could have managed to do so, but Francis Banda’s solo effort hit the side netting after navigating a maze of Power defenders.

In a bid to salvage the game, Warriors coach George Chilufya reacted swiftly with a triple substitution, introducing David Obashi, Chrispin Siamate and Charles Sichilima in place of Quadri Kola, Gabriel Banda and Field Kandela, respectively.

Turning at the break, the hosts pushed for a consolation in the second half, but the visitors stood resolute at the back.

In a bid to give several players game time ahead of this weekend’s Absa Cup quarterfinal clash against Nchanga Rangers, Power coach Osward Mutapa made five changes at once. Fredrick Mulambia, Prince Mumba, Daniel Adoko, Moses Shumah and Chifundo Mphasi were all rested, with Ishmael Ankobo, Austin Muwowo, Ronel Manyanga, Linos Makwaza and Titus Chansa introduced to see out the match.

In the 90th minute, drama unfolded when goalkeeper Mulenga was sent off for handling the ball outside the 18-yard box. With all substitutions already used, holding midfielder Owen Tembo was forced into goal, stepping up to see out the eight minutes of added time.

Tembo rose to the occasion, producing two outstanding reflex saves to deny David Obashi and Charles Sichilima. His heroic performance earned him the Fans’ Player of the Match award for preserving the clean sheet.

The victory sees Power Dynamos move seven points clear at the top of the table, with 61 points from 27 matches.
