MUBI has released the official artwork for Akinola Davies Jr.’s highly acclaimed debut feature My Father’s Shadow, ahead of its UK and Ireland cinema release on 6 February 2026. The artwork, hand-painted by celebrated Ghanaian poster artist D.A. Jasper, pays homage to the rich visual traditions of West African film culture while reflecting the emotional depth of the story.
My Father’s Shadow has quickly become one of the most talked-about films of the year, earning major international accolades, including:
- Best Director, 2025 British Independent Film Awards
- Breakthrough Director and Outstanding Lead Performance, 2025 Gotham Awards
- The U.K.’s official submission for the Academy Award® for Best International Feature Film
- Special Mention, Un Certain Regard, 2025 Cannes Film Festival
- UK Premiere at the 2025 BFI London Film Festival
Starring Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (Slow Horses, Gangs of London) and introducing young actors Godwin Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo, the film continues to generate excitement among critics, audiences and industry observers alike.
Set in Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis, My Father’s Shadow follows a father and his two young sons as they navigate a city in turmoil. The film explores themes of family, estrangement and resilience against the backdrop of political instability.
Co-written by Wale Davies and Akinola Davies Jr., and beautifully shot by cinematographer Jermaine Edwards, the film offers a sensitive and visually compelling perspective on a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s contemporary history, told through the eyes of a child.
The official artwork has been created by renowned Ghanaian artist D.A. Jasper, a pioneer of the iconic hand-painted movie poster tradition known throughout West Africa. Reflecting on the process, Jasper shared:
“Painting this for My Father’s Shadow was a wonderful and emotional process. I worked from an image that I then translated into my canvas with my oils, hoping that I could express all of the emotion from the film into something that intersects photography, a story, and fine art. From a shadow from my brush strokes to the final details and colours, we hoped to create something that could be both shown in an art gallery and in a movie theatre.”
Jasper’s contribution reinforces the film’s celebration of African artistry, heritage and storytelling.
